This is part 3 of my story "The Phoenix Chronicles". Yes, Yes, I know lame name. I'll probably change it. I know I haven't been writing much lately, but I have been writing more!
Here is Part 3's Rough Draft. (Part 1+2 are the Prologue. Part 3+ are the actual story.)
Chapter 1: A Date with Fire
The mesmerized girl treaded across the seemingly never-ending wood. With each passing tree, came another just like it. It was as if she was not even moving, but on what we know now as a treadmill. Making the movement, yet going nowhere. Every now and then, she would trip. Sometimes, she would even hope she could trip, so that she could lie down just a little longer, though it wasn’t really a concern of hers. As far as she knew, her life was over; not only her life, but everyone else’s life as well. Dreading the thought of what the world would be like now, she stopped her treading footsteps, standing there, pondering on what would happen now.
“Why….. did it happen this way?....” the tortured girl sobbed to herself, hoping that the answer would magically come to her.
A piercing caw from a giant bird sounded, as it came soaring down right beside her. The girl watched it as it quickly swooped down, catching a small zalzar in its talons. Softly she whispered to herself, “Fuziko….” She collapsed to the ground, bursting into tears, wishing, hoping, pleading that he would just magically come back running into her arms. Dying for an answer, she screamed unto the heavens, “Why did it have to be this way? He was the one for me!”
As if on cue, two warm arms came around her, and pulled her close to the body. The arms were somewhat muscular, but had no hair, though it was easy to tell they were definitely male. Not a full grown man, but not a boy either. The girl smiled, not looking at who was hugging her, because she knew who it was. It was the chosen one, and her lover. She could tell by how he held her, and how his arms were formed. She whispered softly so the boy behind her.
“How long have you been watching me…?” The awestruck girl asked in a pleasant, loving voice.
“I heard you say that the love of your life was gone. That’s all I heard.” He returned his reply, in a soft, calm tone. He hugged her tighter as he responded.
Her smile widened. She loved his voice. It always soothed her heart no matter how upset she was. She missed him so much, but now she had him back. Fully comforted, her mood significantly changed. “How did you escape becoming stone?! I waited 6 agonizing months! How did you find me Fuziko?! Please tell me! I must know!” She frantically asked, her voice wavering..
The boy grew silent. He had no idea what she was talking about, and was purely there just to comfort her. He hated seeing girls cry, and didn’t want her to keep crying, especially not a beautiful girl as this young lady. He sighed, then softly spoke to her. “I apologize that you mistook me for someone else. I am not who you think I am.” He stopped hugging her as he said this, thinking it would just make things worse.
“Y- You aren’t Fuziko?!” The girl was in shock. Has she really been away from him for so long, that she couldn’t even remember his voice or touch? She could have sworn that that was his voice! How could she have made such a grave mistake, and made such a fool of herself! Quickly she turned around and looked at him. “Don’t lie to me. You have to be Fuziko!” She gazed intently at his face, looking for just one difference from the face she loved and remembered. Everything was the same. The hair was a little different, but that is a given for being away for 6 months. She started tearing up, as she gently placed her hand on his face. “You have to be Fuziko…” She kept whispering to herself, over and over as if it were a chant. She gently rubbed the birthmark under this boy’s eye. It was the same exact mark Fuziko had. It looked just like an eagle’s talon, but in some instances, it also looked like a bag under his eye, making it look as if he was extremely tired. It signified that he was the chosen one, or so he told her.
“If you are not Fuziko, then tell me. Why do you have this birthmark!?” Her voice suddenly turned violent, as she barked ferociously at the accused liar, as she pointed at the mark below the boy’s eye. “And look into my eyes when you tell me! I can tell when someone is lying.”
The boy looked deeply into her eyes, and spoke softly to her. Even though he was accused of being a liar, he didn’t even make the slightest movement of fear, nor a move of anger. He was completely calm. When he spoke, her eyes turned from fierce, to desperation. “This isn’t a birthmark. It is a scar from when an eagle attacked me.” He made a slight pause, to reword what he said, then spoke again, “The eagle didn’t really attack me. I was getting some water from the well so that I could cook supper for myself, and it just swooped down, and made the mark on my flesh. When I checked it, it seemed as if it was already healed, and decided not to worry about it. It happened about six months ago.” He smiled softly to her, got up, and offered her a hand. “Speaking of supper, I was out here picking some fruit for myself to eat alongside the meal I was going to make myself. Would you like to join me, perhaps? Maybe you could tell me about this “Fuziko” person as well.”
The girl grabbed the boy’s hand, as he helped pull her up. Answering his question, she spoke in an apologetic tone, “I’m sorry for mistaking you for being… my… yeah….” She took a long pause before speaking again. “I would love to join you for dinner, ummm….”
“Call me Kaen(Blaze/flame in English, hence “A Date with FIRE”)”
“Then I would love to join you for dinner, Kaen.”
“Then it’s settled!” He grabbed her hand and started a lead to his house, picking up his basket of fruit in his other hand. “We will have dinner at my house, and you will tell me about this Fuziko fellow.”
Blushing at him holding her hand, she barely made out, “O-ok”
The small journey was a quiet one. Saria had to keep to herself all of her thoughts, and wavering emotions. She was greatly troubled that this person, who was like Fuziko in nearly every way, was not the one that she loved and cared for, for many, devastating years.
“Who is this person…” Saria thought to herself, looking deeply into his sparkling eyes. “Why…Why is he just like him?” Quickly looking back in her memories, to what happened moments before, she realized the truth. “No, he’s not like him. He looks and sounds like him, but his personality is very different. He is much more sensitive, and calm. Fuziko was more of a radical type.” She giggled quietly to herself as she continued thinking. “Maybe he isn’t lying. Maybe this… This is the true Chosen One. I always was a bit skeptical about Fuziko being who he said he was. He did seem a bit too ecstatic to fight.”
Kaen, still holding the hand of Saria, raised his hands unto the air, and announced as if to an entire army. “Finally! We are home.” After his announcement, Kaen shot a curious look at Saria. “Hmm, I remember telling you my name, but I don’t ever remember hearing yours. May I ask, what was it again?”
Saria giggled at the large expression he gave as they reached his settlement, and interlaced her fingers with her newly found friend as she said her name with a slight hang on the “ri-“ section.
“W-we should get inside.” Kaen stammered slightly, breaking his hand from her grip, and somewhat rushing to the front of the small wooden building.
“Umm, Kaen?” Her voice sounded a higher pitched as she asked this. It made it seem as if there was not an evil bone in her body. The level of innocence in her voice was enough to make nearly any person want to hug her as tight as possible. At least, this is what Kaen thought.
Instantly, Kaen turned around, and looked at her with a wide blush on his face. He slightly stuttered as he made out, “Y-yes, S-saria?”
“Did… Did I do something wrong?” Saria noticed the blush on his face, but had no clue at all from what it was from. The most she did was interlace her…. oh.
Again, Kaen heard the pure innocence in her voice as she asked the question. The amazed boy instantly responded, without even a chance to think, “You have the most wonderful voice in the world.” As he said this, he slowly walked over to her. He could not seem to control his bodily motions. Once he was at where Saria was, Kaen gave the innocent beauty a large hug, squeezing their bodies together as he softly spoke into her ear. “I don’t want anything bad to happen to you….. Ever.”
Greatly comforted by what he had said, she started crying into her new friend’s heart. Her cries were loud, and sorrowful, to the extent that Kaen swore he could feel the pain in his heart that she was feeling. Kaen started seeing images of himself… battling creatures, exploring caves, collecting valuable items, all alongside of this girl. This was the strangest thing he has ever seen. The boy was nothing at all like the person he saw on these images! Adventure like that was just as bad as suicide! Why did the images he was seeing involve him doing radical stunts. He knew it was him; it even had the scar from the eagle he received less than a year ago! Seeing these images rapidly appearing in his head worried him. Nearly fainting, the boy slowly let go of Saria, as the images started to fade. He grabbed her hand and slowly led her inside.
The rest of the night was a peaceful one. Kaen cooked supper for his new friend, which included soup full of all kinds of vegetables, and spicy herbs, with some loaves of bread to soak up the broth. They ate together in silence, due to such an eventful day they’ve been having. After supper, Saria thanked the boy, and Kaen lead her to his room, and told her to sleep there. Saria strongly disagreed, stating that she could not possibly take him out of his own bed. Kaen insisted, and Saria eventually agreed. The boy passed onto her some of his mother’s night clothes, since she is now gone, and no longer using them. His mother and Saria were about the same size, so he assumed it would be okay.
Saria tried on the clothes, and to her surprise, fit perfectly! After putting on the clothes, she was out in just a few minutes. Kaen slept in the guest room, and was off to dreamland just as quickly.
