Before seeing this, why don't you check my Character Tutorial Here and my Tutorial for Enlarging Character Description Boxes Here

Hello! I'm creating this tutorial, so you, begginer character creators to know to get your pics HQ, for your template, without needing to ask for someone to do it. Honestly, it's being hard to see so many chars with ugly images...

Let's begin? Oh, I almost forgot! You'll need any GIMP version. You'll find one version that can be easily downloaded here. Yep, it's free of "monsters" that like to eat your computer.

OK, when downloaded and installed, you can begin!~

Step One:

Find your pics. You can Google them, go here or Print Screen the pic from the episode that you want to use in your template. So, you found them? If yes, proceed to Step Two!~

Step Two:

OK, now, open GIMP and select your image. I'll use this one:
deidara1.jpg

Now, we have to cut the unecessary parts. Go to <Tools<Transform Tools<Crop or just press Shitf + C. You can click on the tool in the Toolbox.
tut.jpg

Then, select with the Crop tool, the part of the pic that you want to "save".
Example:tut1.jpg

After selecting it, click on the selected square, and your pic will be as you wished.
Quick Note: When using the Crop tool, pay attention to the size X and Y you are selecting. Try to make that the size X be the most similar to the size Y, so it'll be easier for the Step Three.

Step Three:
Congrats! You make through Step Two! Now, let's resize the cropped image to the correct size (75x75).

Use the resize tool in the toolbox or just press Shift + T.
tut3.jpg

Write in the resize boxes the correct size.

Width: 75
Heigth: 75

Example: tut4.jpg

Step Four:
Now it's time to make those pics beautiful!
Use the Contrast and Brightness (Colours<Brightness-Contrast) and play with the boxes to have a good looking.

Before Brightness and Contrast: tut5.jpg

After Brightness and Contrast: tut6.jpg

Step Fifth and the last one:
Now, for a grand finale, let's sharp them.
Go to Filters<Enhance<Sharpen.

Example: tut7.jpg

Increase the number in the box, so the pic becomes sharpened, but do not make a big number. That way, the pics becomes oversharpened.

Before Sharpening: tut6.jpg

After Sharpening: tut8.jpg

Step Fifth Point One
An alternative for Step Fifth. Here, with this pic:
tut5-1.jpg

Then, to sharpen it, I'll use the Blur/Sharpen tool:
tut9.jpg

Note: Don't forget to switch it to sharpen

You can choose the rate's number below. For a better use I'll use a rate of 50. Them brush the pic with it. Brush it until you get the result wished:

Example: tut10.jpg

Step Fifth Point Two:

Another alternative for sharpening the image, using the Unsharp Mask. Again, I'll use this pic:
tut5-1.jpg

Then, I'll go to Filters<Enhance<Unsharp Mask.
Example:tut11.jpg

Then, in the box, you'll have three scrolls and three boxes. In the first one, but the number 0. In the third one, 0 too. In the middle one, I want you to put a number between 80-100. You can select the number between 80-100 and see the preview, to see what's the best number.
Example:tut12.jpg

After using Unsharp Mask:
tuttut13.jpg

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Looks like we are over. If you want to learn to how make good characters in GIMP, click here for Sauke1616's Character Tutorial.

Glad I helped!:blink

The final result can be in various ways. It depends on the Contrast, Bright and Sharpening used. But thanks for the rate.

This is a great guide but the only thing that disturbs me though is the last part where you use the sharpening tool (Sometime you tend to oversharpen images then they look jaggy)

Instead, just use the sharpen brush over the whole image and whip it until it looks good to you, then you can judge as to wether you need to sharp the image more or keep it where it is

I think this should be stickied since people tend to have problems with getting HQ images, this will help a lot :amused

It's pretty much the same thing with the cropping and everything else

@Water- Do you think I should make a Photoshop version of this for you? I'll still give you credit for the idea :3

I used it because I wanted to show the techniques that people must use and how that techniques may change a LQ pic into a great quality one. Thanks!

@Mirror: Sure you can. It is very good too!:amused
