Kusanagi is the name of the sword Orochimaru uses. But this comes from an ancient japanese Legend where Orochi was a snake with 7 heads (I think that in Naruto´s storyline Orochi will be the 8 tailed demon), and the members of the Kusanagi Clan cut all the heads off using a sword of fire. Hence, the sword was named "the Kusanagi Sword".

The legend I told you is in fact much more longer and it seems that Naruto´s main storyline is being based in it. If we can read something about this legend we may discover some cool names in japanese. Just so that you have an idea, The King Of Fighters game´s story (I hope you all know about it ) is precisely based on this same legend (the main character is Kyo Kusanagi who uses flames on his moves and the enemy is Orochi. Orochi is the name of the snake demon, and the suffix "maru" means person, so "Orochimaru" is in fact this demon made a person). Well, my point is that if we know something more about this legend, we may come up with a cool name...and maybe later it will appear in Naruto´s story! For exmaple, we may discover an important person in this story named "Yagami" (just an example), then we use this name and in some months suddenly a cool character appears in Naruto named just like our clan! Wouldn´t it be cool?

The Orochi and Kusanagi Legend
I´ve done some research and I´ve found a lot about Orochi´s legend and Kusanagi´s story and, what´s more important, I´ve found that Naruto is using these legends A LOT. This is Kusanagi´s story:
Quote:
Long time ago, the snake demon Orochi was ruling with fear over a village in Japan. This demon was a snake with 8 heads and 8 tails. He had devoured 7 of the 8 daughters of an ancient couple and was planning to eat the last one as well. A god, the brother of Amatsurane (goddes of the sun and leader of the heavens) went to the Earth and helped the couple. They put 8 doors in their house and a coup of sake in each of them. When Orochi came, each of his heads drank one coup, got drunk and slept. Then the god, using his sword, cut off the 8 heads. Then he started cutting the tails but when cutting the 4th one, he found a sword inside. This sword was named Kusanagi (Kusa = sword, nagi = snake). The god returned to the eheavens and gave the sord to his sister as a gift.
Time later, the goddes gave the sword to one of her descendants on earth. This guy who was a warrior was lured to a trap by an enemy: he got into a field with high grass and the enemy set the field on fire. He started cutting the grass to stop the fire but it was not enough. Suddenly, he discovered that he could control the wind with the sword, so he used it to trow the flames at his enemy and won.
How is this all related to Naruto? See:
-Orochimaru is the incarnation os the demon Orochi. He even has Kusanagi inside him and uses snakes.
-Kusanagi is a real sword and is one of the 3 sacred treasures of Japan, which are used in the ceremony when a new emperor takes his position. THe other 2 sacred treasures are a magic octogonal mirror and a jade jewel. The most curious thing is that the earrings that Orochimaru wears, are exactly like this sacred jewel.
-Kusanagi is also known as the "grass-cutting sword". Orochimaru used it to kill the Hokage, remember? It was like he was cutting the grass (Konoha is the hidden vilage of leaf) with his "grass-cutting sword".
(IF YOU HAVE NOT READ THE MANGA SKIP THIS PARAGRAPH, SPOILERS COMING)
-Kusanagi was found when the god was cutting the fourth tail of Orochi...How many tails can Naruto use of the Kyubi? 4 as well!!!
(IF YOU HAVE NOT READ THE MANGA SKIP THIS PARAGRAPH AS WELL, SPOILERS COMING)
-Kusanagi can control the wind and Naruto´s chakra is wind type!!! Maybe Naruto will kill Orochimaru or somehow get Kusanagi and use it in the future! Remember that in the manga, Sasuke is using a Katana now, so it wouldn´t be too strange if Naruto started using a weapon too to fight against him. Also Sasuke uses fire in his techniques, so Naruto will use wind to throw the flames back at him like the descendant of Amatsurane did...
-Kusanagi is the symbol of valour in Japan...it identificates Naruto pretty well, don´t you think?
-Itachi has a technique named Amatsurane!
-And many, many others I can´t remember now, they´re everywhere!
I think that Kusanagi Clan will be a very cool name: it means valour, it also means "Snake Sword", it killed the Hokage, it is used by Orochimaru and maybe in the future we´ll see Naruto himself using it! And most important: it´s not just a cool name, it has a lot of meaning behind.
Also, some of the main characters or very important things in manga and anime receive this name:
-Kyo Kusanagi, main character of King Of Fighters
-Makoto Kusanagi, main characer of Ghost in the Shell
-The Kusanagi, the Earth´s best battle-spaceship in Gundam Seed

Legend of the Kusanagi Sword

" The history of this sword extends into legend when the Japanese god, Susano-O-No-Mikoto encountered a grieving family headed by Ashi-Na-Zuchi. Upon inquiry, the elder told that his family was ravaged by the fearsome 8-headed serpent (Orochi) of Koshi who consumed seven of the family's eight daughters and the creature was coming for his final daughter, Kushi-Nada-Hime. Susano proceeded forward to investigate tne creature, and after an abortive encounter he returned with a plan to defeat it. In return, he asked for Kushi-Nada-Hime's hand in marriage which was agreed. Transforming her temporarily into a comb to have her company during the battle, he detailed his plan.
He instructed the preparation of 8 vats of rice-beer to be put on individual platforms positioned behind a fence with 8 gates. The monster took the bait and put each of its heads through each of the gates. With the necessary distraction provided, Susano attacked and slew the beast. He decapitated each of the heads and then proceeded to the tails. In the fourth tails, he discovered a great sword inside the body with Susan-o which he called Murakakumo-No-Tsurugi (Sword-of-the-village-of-the-clustering-clouds) which he presented to the god, Amaterasu to settle an old grievance.
Generations later in the reign of the 12th emperor, Keiko, the sword was given to the great warrior, Yamato-Dake as part of a pair of gifts given by his aunt, Yamato-Hime, to protect his nephew in peril.
These gifts came in handy when Yamato-Dake was lured onto an open grassland during a hunting expedition by a treacherous Daimyo. The lord, had fiery arrows fired to ignite the grass to trap Yamato-Dake in the field and have him burn to death and killed the warrior's horse to prevent his escape. Desperately, Yamato-Dake used Murakakumo-No-Tsurugi to cut back the grass to remove fuel from the fire, but in doing so, he discovered that the sword enabled him to control the wind around to make it move in the direction he swung. Taking advantage of the magic, Yamato-Dake used his other gift, fire strikers, to enlarge the fire in the direction of the lord and his men and used the winds controlled by the sword to sweep the blaze toward them to kill them. In triumph, Yamato-Dake renamed Murakakumo-No-Tsurugi as Kusanagi (Grasscutter) to commemorate his narrow escape and victory.
Eventually, Yamato-Dake married and fell in battle with a monster after ignoring his wife's advice to take Kusanagi with him.
Eventually, the sword came into the possession of the emperor until the Battle of Dannoura, a naval battle that ended in the defeat of the forces of the child Emperor, Antoku at the hands of Minomoto Yoshitsune. Upon hearing of the defeat, the emperor's grandmother led the Emporer and his entourage to commit suicide in the waters of the strait along with three important artifacts which included Kusanagi. Although the enemy managed to stop a handful of them and recovered two of the three items of the Emperor, Kusanagi was never found.
The 10th Emporer, Sujin, ordered the fashioning of a replica of Kusanagi and was placed at the Temple of Atsuta. "
