Rinnegan is the blood inheritance limit of Rokudou Sennin (Six Realms Sage) and his descendants. Rokudou Sennin was viewed as the original shinobi and his Doujutsu was regarded as the most venerable of the three great Doujutsu. As the original shinobi it was said he created modern Ninjutsu. The Rinnegan was regarded as a god of creation when the world was racked with chaos and as a weapon of destruction which could return everything to nothingness. Usage of the Rinnegan was said to give the user mastery over all six forms of chakra nature manipulation.

The true extent of the Rinnegan abilities are currently unknown. Rain orphan Nagato was an inheritor of the Doujutsu, and used it unconsciously when he was angry and afraid. He entered into a berserk state which allowed him to defeat a much stronger foe. It may be this same ability which allowed him to never lose a battle as "Pain," the leader of the Rain Village rebel faction and Akatsuki. Nagato in the guise of "Pain" also has the ability to switch between six different bodies. Each body that Nagato shares also wields the Rinnegan. When Pain summons the other host bodies to fight alongside him, each Rinnegan host will share the same vision. Meaning what one Pain views, all his other bodies also view, even if their vision is damaged. By increasing the number of Rinnegan host bodies on the battlefield, Pain will increase the number of viewing angles and eliminate any potential blind spots.

Nagato's ability to switch between these host bodies probably gives rise to the "Transmigration" name. This is a cycle of reincarnation and rebirth seen in Hinduism and Buddhism. There are six states of rebirth in the cosmology, representing all the good and bad possibilities of life.

t all starts with the rinegan. The rinegan means Metempsychosis eye. Metempsycosis is the belief of transmigration of the soul. After death, ones soul eventually ends up in another being whether it would be plant, animal, human etc.

This ties with the belief of the Bhavacakra. The six realms of existence.
The world of Devas(gods)
The world of Asuras(demi gods, titans)
The world of Humans
The world of Animals
The world of Pretas(hungry ghosts)
The world of Hell.

How does this tie with the rinegan? Well, the soul is meant to roam free, but is bound by the body. After death the boundry is destroyed, meaning the soul can roam free but it is eventually trapped in the never ending cycle of rebirth.

Now my theory is the rinegan works even after death, giving the person a new life. According to the metemphyscosis, if ones life is high and and good they will be even higher up in the next life. They will usually have on their body or in their mind a relec or memory of their past life.

Now, it starts with before rikodou was born. It starts with an animal. This animal died but would later on be reincarnated into a higher soul. This is when rikodou is born.

The Rinnegan (輪廻眼; Literally meaning "Samsara Eye") is the most powerful, revered and supreme of all the three main eye techniques (瞳術, dōjutsu). The Rinnegan is characterized by a number of concentric circles around the pupil of the user. It has recently been revealed that in addition to allowing an individual to quickly master various jutsu, the user may also use all six forms of nature manipulation. Like the Sharingan and Byakugan do, the Rinnegan also allows the user to sense chakra, including an otherwise hidden barrier. It was first possessed by the Sage of the Six Paths (六道仙人, Rikudō Sennin), said to be the founder of the ninja world and the creator of the first ninjutsu. Currently, the eyes are possessed by Pain.

Pain uses the Rinnegan in his fight with Jiraiya, summoning a total of six bodies that all possessed the Rinnegan. An ability gained by using the Rinnegan is that all the bodies can see each individual body's field of vision. Because of this advantage, one must be blinded in order for a blind spot to be opened. Pain also managed to summon numerous animals each possessing the Rinnegan and presumably sharing their sight.

The anime's Rinnegan prior to Episode 80.Contrast to the anime, the manga has shown that the Rinnengan actually is purple in color. This mistake was most likely done due to the manga not releasing the color in time for the anime. This error was corrected as of episode 80 of Shippūden.
