#1 Part 12: Revelations She looked at him curiously, waiting in respectful silence. She noted his shadowed eyes as he prepared himself. His tale might be of great importance. Perhaps I can learn the answers to my questions if I listen carefully. She saw him bowing his head, then he spoke: “I came from a wealthy French family, about two hundred years ago. A plague had ravaged our small town, and killed so many people, leaving the rest sick and dying. Rich or poor; it did not matter. It came mysteriously and had no known cure; the people just died a few days after getting sick, rotting from the inside, and smelling foul as if already dead for weeks.” Itsuki raised her eyebrows. Interesting. I wonder what sort of illness that is? Did it affect other places as well? She wrapped her cloak tightly around her as the night brought forth a cold gust of wind, and listened on. “It struck my family as well, taking the life of my baby brother. No one could help him; physicians refused to come to our town, no matter how much money father offered to pay them. The only doctor in town had already died because of that same sickness. Father was left with no other choice but to turn to black magic. He delved into the darkest of arcane arts, trying to find a way to heal Michal. He-” “Wait.”, Itsuki interrupted, frowning at Devon. “Your father is a warlock?” He regarded her strangely, and for a long time before answering, “Yes, my father was a warlock. But he kept that from us long ago. We never had any idea what he was up to, why he locked himself up in our library almost every night. Only when it was too late, when we have already become vampires did we know.” “Ah. I see.” She narrowed her eyes, still unconvinced. Devon’s father could be a threat. With a vampire warlock, people here are doomed! And I couldn’t even do anything about it! “I doubt it.”, Devon told her, reading her mind. “Father may be a warlock, but he has long since abandoned the craft. I did say “was”, didn’t I? And he was never really an adept at it, or so he claimed. So you need not worry about him using magic to lure people to their deaths.” He smiled at her wryly. Itsuki gasped “H-how-?” “…did I read your mind? Easy. For some reason, the ward you placed upon yourself was lifted. So reading your mind was as simple as reading words on a parchment.” She swore, then Devon felt a tingling in the air as he watched her furrow her brow in concentration. Father was not as skilled as her in terms of other spells, but no doubt he was good with curses. Damn good. He lowered his head and sighed. “Did you say something, Devon?” He snapped his head up and stared at Itsuki, realizing he had spoken his thoughts aloud. “Nothing… it was nothing important.” She frowned, then shrugged. “If you say so… look, I’m sorry if I interrupted you. I was just… caught off guard. I didn’t expect… well. If you still want to continue, I am ready to listen.” Devon smiled at her thankfully, took another deep breath and went on with his tale… “He tried everything he could to find a cure, and also a protection, so the rest of the family would not be afflicted. But he failed. And he couldn’t accept the fact Michal died despite everything he had done to save him. He… he spent the night holding Michal’s body. Grieving. #3 The entire Clans section is probably going to get deleted again at some point in another attempt to fix it as it's still having several problems. Therefore, I recommend to all of you, save a back up of your Clan Topic posts and member lists e.t.c. They may come in handy in the event of another wipe out, there will not be any warning and I'm sure that you don't want to start from scratch all over again if it does happen. Thanks, artivous13.
